Mission Statement of IYAO:
IYAO (Impulse Youth Arts Organization) is a non-profit organization dedicated to growing young people into future leaders through the arts. We are committed to the education of our performers to develop the skills needed to entertain our audience and achieve new levels of competitive excellence cultivating social responsibility, strong ethics and the development of life skills through teamwork, entertainment and competition.
History
IYAO and the Impulse Drum and Bugle Corps was born in the winter of 1998 made up of many dedicated alumni from local Southern California Drum & Bugle corps who wanted to provide this great activity to the community of teens and young adults by bringing a fun, audience friendly and highly competitive drum corps to the field.
Impulse Drum and Bugle Corps was established in 1998 with the purpose to bring fun and competitive productions to audiences throughout the world. Impulse has experienced various levels of competitive success over the years culminating with a DCI Division III Championship in 2006.
IYAO was determined to aid in the proliferation of Drum & Bugle Corps and the pageantry arts youth activities in a region that contains several million young musicians and performers. Over the last couple of years, IYAO has accomplished:
✦ 1998: IMPULSE Youth Arts Organization and Impulse Drum & Bugle Corps was established.
✦ 2000: IYAO helped establish San Diego ALLIANCE drum & bugle.
The group went undefeated in Division III during the summer of 2001. Today the group exits independently
from IYAO as an independent percussion ensemble.
✦ 2001: IYAO established Rhythm Regiment Junior Drum Corps as corps for kids between the age of 3 and 13.
The group does a number of performances thought out the year.
✦ 2001: IYAO helped establish So Cal Dream “all aged” drum & bugle corps. Today the crops operates independently from IYAO
✦ 2003 & 2005: Impulse winter guard was formed, and we hope to host a winter guard again in the future.
✦ 2005: PULSE percussion ensemble was established and within in their first year they placed 9th in WGI’s independent World
Class. The unit was started by Ike Jackson, Caleb Rothe and Ray Santos was the groups first director.
✦ 2006: Impulse won first place in DCI Championships division III in Madison, WI.
✦ 2009: PULSE percussion finished 4th place with a score 93.513 at WGI Finals in Dayton, OH.
✦ 2013 & 2014: Impulse extends tour to include stops in Idaho and Utah in preparation for return to Finals.
✦ 2015: Impulse extends tour once again to include additional stops in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Utah.
✦ 2016: Impulse returned to a national tour schedule with their show. "Music is _______?"
✦ 2017: Impulse continues on the national tour stage presenting "In the Beginning"
✦ 2018: 20th anniversary season, it's going to be a good one!
One of IYAO’s many goals is to build stronger performers and train more quality instructors to benefit the surrounding school music programs. By supporting school music and pageantry programs, Impulse creates a win/win situation for all involved.
