What is Drum & Bugle Corps? Click here for more info.
Historical Roots of Drum Corps.
Modern drum and bugle corps find its origins in the post-World War I era. Impressed by the precision and pageantry of American military and parade units, parents launched drum corps in their communities so their children could benefit from rigorous instruction and discipline. Drum corps grew steadily from the 1930s through the early 1970's, finding sponsorship and support with groups like the VFW, American Foreign Legion posts and the Catholic/Christian Youth Organizations.

In 1972, the formation of Drum Corps International (DCI) provided a uniformed judging system that has enabled the activity to evolve on an artistic level where the sophistication of creative and artistic skills in drum and bugle corps has increased tremendously. The activity has developed to a level, such that it is now considered to be a contemporary art form, while the organizational efforts of DCI have elevated the status of the activity to its current position as the second largest youth program in the United States.

A Brief IMPULSE History
Impulse's first competitive season was in 1999. In 1999, Impulse was the first corps to earn competitive status their first year. The corps toured locally in California performing at a total of 5 competitions. The Charter Members Membership totaled 54 members being made up of 2 Drum Majors, 4 Color Guard, 21 Percussionists and 27 Brass.

The media has also been good to Impulse as they have been performing in the nationally televised Huntington Beach 4th of July Parade as a crowd favorite from 2001 through 2006. The most notable parade they performed in was the Blockbuster Hollywood Spectacular for Christmas 2002 (normally known as the Hollywood Lane Christmas Parade).

Since 1999 Impulse has grown in membership, staff and infrastructure. Impulse's popularity also has grown quickly having performed at Drums Along the Rockies in Denver Colorado in 2000, and as a quarterfinalist at Drum Corps International Div II/III Championships in 2001 in Buffalo, NY and 2002 in Madison Wisconsin.

IMPULSE has been a DCI Div II Grand Finalist since 2003 placing 10th at the 2003 Grand Finals, 8th in Division II in 2003 and topping that feat in 2004 and 2005 by placing 6th at Grand Finals, and topping it AGAIN in 2006 by winning the DCI Division III World Champion Title, and placing 8th overall at Div II / III Grand Finals.
Impulse is looking to continue their upward trend in 2008 which will see the DCI Open Division Finals being held near Indianapolis Indiana.
