Dedication
Impulse Youth
Arts Organization is dedicated to excellence in pageantry and the
proliferation of the Drum & Bugle Corps activity in Southern
California.
Fun
IYAO believes that the Drum & Bugle Corps activity is the
perfect vehicle for young adults, because it combines the best
of athletics, music and the arts. These ingredients along with
a dedication to high quality performance execution, make it a
unique recipe for "FUN".
The members
involved in our units have as much enjoyment performing as the
audience has watching their performances. Our
unique combination of performance excellence and fun sets us apart
from the rest, and defines us as IMPULSE!
The Birth
IYAO was born in the winter of 1998 made up of many dedicated
alumni from local Southern Califronia Drum & Bugle Corps who
wanted to provide this great activity to the community of teens
and adults while continuing to bring a fun, audience friendly
and highly competetive drum corps to the field. Much in the spirit
and style of the Bridgemen during the late 70's and early 80's,
with a modern Southern California twist.
Leading the proliferation
of Drum & Bugle Corps and independent pageantry arts in So
California.
IYAO was determined to aid in the proliferation of Drum &
Bugle Corps and the pageantry arts youth activities in a region
that contains several million young musicians and performers.
Over the last 8 years, here is what IYAO has accomplished to date:
- 1998, Phase
I of IYAO's plan to build the activity in our area resulted
in the fielding of IMPULSE drum & bugle corps. Now
in its eighth year, IMPULSE will be competing this summer of
2006 at the Drum Corps International Div II Championships in
Madison Wisconsin, and has been a Grand Finalist the last 3
years.
- 2000, Phase
II of IYAO's plan to build the activity in our area resulted
in the San Diego ALLIANCE drum & bugle corps. This
group, now strong enough to succeed outside IYAO, was undefeated
in Div III competition during the summer of 2001. It currently
exists as an independent percussion ensemble.
- In the
winter of 2001, Phase III of IYAO's plan to build the activity
in our area resulted in the inclusion of the Rhythm Regiment
junior drum corps into the IMPULSE family of musical pageantry
units. This corps caters to kids the ages of 3 years to 13 years
of age and does over 10 performances a year.
- Also in
the winter of 2001, Phase IV included the So Cal Dream "all
aged" drum & bugle corps into the IMPULSE family
of musical pageantry units. This corps catered to adults 22
years of age and older. After two very successful summer seasons
showing rapid growth, So Cal Dream now operates independently
of IYAO with great success.
- Skipping
a few years until the time was right, Phase V
became
a reality in 2005 with the PULSE
percussion
ensemble who placed 9th their first season at WGI's independent
World Class Finals. This unit was created by Ike Jackson and
Caleb Rothe, who's work is well known with the nationally renown
Ayala high school percussion units. Ray Santos was Pulse's first
director in 2005 and in 2006 Caleb Rothe steps up to the plate
as Director.
- Impulse
has also hosted the existence of two winterguards.
Impulse winterguard in 2003 and the Jade winterguard
in 2005. The future may still see yet another Impulse winterguard
if our community demands it.
Operational Philosophy
Each of these performance units operates independently from the
others, raises its own funds, but shares resources to help support
itself and the others as it works out a careful and methodical
plan of growth. Each of these units are operated independently
by volunteer staff.
Goals for today
and tomorrow
One of IYAO's many goals is to build stronger performers and train
more quality instructors to benefit the surrounding school music
programs. By supporting school music and pageantry programs, IMPULSE
creates a win / win situation for all involved.
Get involved!
